Sole: Nature’s Electrolyte Solution

A Simple Daily Ritual for Hydration, Minerals & Longevity

For thousands of years, natural salt has been treasured as one of the Earth's most valuable healing resources. Long before sports drinks and electrolyte powders existed, cultures around the world relied on mineral-rich salt to replenish the body, preserve food, support vitality, and maintain health.

Today, many of us drink plenty of water—but remain under-mineralized. Modern diets, chronic stress, intense exercise, excessive sweating, processed foods, and even filtered water can all reduce the amount of essential minerals available to our cells.

One of my favorite daily wellness rituals is sole (pronounced so-LAY), a fully saturated solution of natural, unrefined salt dissolved in water. It's incredibly simple to make, costs very little, and provides your body with naturally occurring trace minerals that support healthy hydration.

What Is Sole

(pronounced so-LAY)?

Sole is a solution created by dissolving unrefined mineral-rich salt, such as Himalayan Pink Salt or Celtic Sea Salt, into pure water until the water becomes fully saturated.

When the water can no longer dissolve additional salt, the solution contains a stable concentration of naturally occurring minerals.

Unlike refined table salt—which has been stripped of most trace minerals and often contains anti-caking agents—natural salt contains dozens of trace minerals that occur naturally within the earth.

These include:

  • Sodium

  • Potassium

  • Magnesium

  • Calcium

  • Chloride

  • Zinc

  • Iron

  • Manganese

  • Copper

  • Selenium

  • Numerous additional trace elements in very small amounts

Although these trace minerals are present in modest quantities, they work together to support many of the body's natural physiological processes.

Why Are Electrolytes So Important?

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in water.

They help every cell in your body communicate.

Without adequate electrolytes, your body simply cannot function optimally.

Electrolytes help regulate:

  • Hydration inside and outside your cells

  • Nerve signaling

  • Muscle contraction

  • Heart rhythm

  • Blood pressure

  • Energy production

  • Brain function

  • Acid-base balance

  • Cellular communication

Every heartbeat, every thought, every muscle contraction, and every nerve impulse depends on electrolytes.

Water alone isn't enough.

Your cells need minerals to actually absorb and utilize that water effectively.

The Problem With Modern Hydration

Many people drink large amounts of purified or reverse osmosis water.

While excellent for removing contaminants, highly purified water also removes naturally occurring minerals.

Combine that with:

  • Coffee

  • Alcohol

  • Chronic stress

  • Heavy exercise

  • Sauna use

  • High sugar intake

  • Certain medications

…and it's easy to become relatively depleted in electrolytes.

Sometimes what feels like dehydration isn't simply a lack of water—it may be a lack of minerals.

Potential Benefits of Sole

Many people enjoy adding sole to their daily routine because it may help support:

  • Better hydration

  • Healthy electrolyte balance

  • Physical performance

  • Energy levels

  • Recovery after exercise

  • Healthy digestion

  • Stomach acid production

  • Adrenal health

  • Mineral intake

  • Muscle function

While many people report positive experiences, it's important to note that research on sole itself is limited. Much of the scientific evidence supports the importance of electrolytes and minerals in general rather than sole as a specific health intervention.

How I Use Sole

One of my favorite morning rituals is drinking mineral-rich water before coffee.

I fill a large glass with filtered water and add approximately:

1 teaspoon of sole

I often add:

  • Fresh lemon

  • Fresh lime

  • A splash of raw apple cider vinegar (optional)

This creates a refreshing mineral drink that gently supports hydration before the day begins.

I especially enjoy this practice after:

  • A workout

  • A sauna session

  • Travel

  • Long hikes

  • A poor night's sleep

  • Time at altitude

  • Hot summer days

Living in the mountains of Colorado, staying hydrated isn't just about drinking more water—it's about replacing the minerals our bodies lose through respiration, exercise, and our dry climate.

How to Make Sole

You'll need:

  • A glass jar with a lid

  • Himalayan Pink Salt or Celtic Sea Salt

  • Filtered water

Directions

  1. Fill the jar about one-quarter to one-third full with natural salt.

  2. Add filtered water until the jar is nearly full.

  3. Let the mixture sit overnight.

  4. If salt crystals remain at the bottom the next day, your solution is fully saturated.

  5. If all the salt dissolves, simply add more salt until some remains on the bottom.

The undissolved salt is actually what tells you the solution has reached full saturation.

Your sole can last indefinitely as long as it stays clean.

Is Sole Right for Everyone?

While natural mineral salt can be a healthy addition for many people, it isn't appropriate for everyone.

Talk with your healthcare provider before using sole if you have:

  • Kidney disease

  • Heart failure

  • Severe hypertension

  • Conditions requiring sodium restriction

  • Any medical condition affecting electrolyte balance

Pregnant individuals and anyone taking medications that affect fluid or electrolyte balance should also seek professional guidance.

More isn't better.

A small amount goes a long way.

The Bigger Picture

Longevity isn't built from one supplement, one superfood, or one biohack.

It's built from consistent daily habits.

Good sleep.

Nourishing food.

Movement.

Healthy relationships.

Sunlight.

Breath.

A regulated nervous system.

And proper hydration.

Sole isn't magic—but it can be one simple ritual that reminds us to nourish our bodies with the minerals nature has always provided.

Sometimes the smallest daily practices become the ones that make the biggest difference over time.

At Aquarian Uprising, I'm always looking for simple, sustainable ways to support the body's natural intelligence. Sole is one of those rituals—easy to make, deeply rooted in nature, and a beautiful reminder that true wellness often begins with the basics.

You can purchase Himalayan Salt at our Studio to make your own Sole.
